Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 3 August 2017 asking for information about weather forecasts.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

1. What information does TfL have as to the total amount of money TfL spent on Weather Forecasting services across TfL in the last financial year? This should include all transport types.

    

   MetDesk provides weather forecasts across TfL. Bespoke forecasts based on their specific needs of certain areas are supplied. The overall cost of this contract is £250,000 over 5 years.

    

    

2. What information does TfL have about the number of forecasts provided each day across TfL for the same period?

    

   The General forecast is twice daily

    

   Specialist forecasts are more varied with 15 minute reporting from weather stations and twice daily rail ice forecasts in winter.

    

    

   In addition to the general forecast, we have access to MetDesk Transportation Web portal providing different types of forecast. During winter season (01/10 to 30/04) specific detailed forecasts are 3 times a day (with additional forecasts during “critical” nights). There are also Forecast Maps updated automatically throughout the day in real time as model data arrives.

    

    

3. What information does TfL hold with regard to the number of suppliers providing weather forecasts across TfL for the same period?

    

   All forecasts are currently supplied by MetDesk.

    

    

4. What information does TfL have regarding whether individual departments have their own forecast or whether a single forecast is disseminated across TfL as a whole?

As stated in our response to Question1, LU and Surface Transport share a supplier (MetDesk) with other specialist supplementary information supplied as required.
