A20 Suface water works

Request ID: FOI-1041-2425
Date published: 26 July 2024

You asked

Hello, I am inquiring about works on the A20 to fix the standing water issue which led to the 40mph speed limit being introduced on the eastbound carriageway. 1. It was previously communicated that work would start in May 2024 however that did not happen, when is the work now due to start? 2. What are the reasons for the delay? 3. What will be the duration of the work? 4. Who is contracted to carry out the work? 5. After the work has been completed, will the speed limit be reverted to the original 50mph/70mph limit? If not, what will the speed limit be?

Our ref: FOI-1041-2425/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 30 June 2024 asking for information about A20 Surface water works.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

  1. It was previously communicated that work would start in May 2024 however that did not happen, when is the work now due to start?
Safety is our number one priority and being mindful of the current impact on the network whilst recognising the impact that a lower speed limit has had on road users, we have explored ways to reduce the time needed to deliver the work on site. Further investigations have been carried out to look at carriageway and drainage, and we have developed a less disruptive design alternative that offers fewer programme risks and this will enable the works to be completed over a one week period, towards the end of August 2024. This is opposed to the twelve-week period previously planned. This alternative option will have no overall impact to the end date of the project and will allow the safety camera to be removed from the network in line with the previous plan, as shared in January.

2. What are the reasons for the delay?
Detailed above

3. What will be the duration of the work?
Detailed above

4. Who is contracted to carry out the work?
FM Conways.

5. After the work has been completed, will the speed limit be reverted to the original 50mph/70mph limit? If not, what will the speed limit be?
The current proposal is to return the speed limit to the previous speed limit of 70mph, however this is subject to a Road Safety Audit upon completion of the works, as is standard procedure to make sure we keep our roads safety for all users.
