Updated position and depth of underground and overground stations
Request ID: FOI-1026-1819
Date published: 02 August 2018
You asked
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, please can you provide me with a spreadsheet containing the geographic location and depth / elevation of the London Underground and Overground stations in operation today, including the new Crossrail stations.
Specifically, I would like a list of all the stations on the London Underground and Overground networks with the depth / elevation of each station (measured in meters above sea level or another well-documented, easy-to-use format).
This data has previously been requested and released, most recently in 2013. However according to the spreadsheets given back then the data was in fact from 2007 so doesn't include recent changes (ie. Crossrail). Please ensure the latest data is more recent.
The purpose for this request is to produce a series of informative data visualisations about the TfL network, though I believe the updated data will be of use to many others too.
We answered
Our ref: FOI-1026-1819/GH
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 11 July 2018 asking for the depth / elevation of our stations.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. Unfortunately we do not hold the information you require.
The spreadsheet you refer to, containing the 2007 data has never been updated as there is no operational requirement for this information.
Whilst much of the information will remain unchanged, sourcing the information for any new or altered stations would take an excessive amount of time and would exceed the ‘appropriate limit’ of £450 set by the Freedom of Information (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.
Under section 12 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to comply with requests if we estimate that the cost of determining whether we hold the information, locating and retrieving it and extracting it from other information would exceed the appropriate limit. In this instance, we estimate that the time required to answer your request would exceed 18 hours which, at £25 per hour (the rate stipulated by the Regulations), exceeds the ‘appropriate limit’.
If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
