Credit on cancelled Oyster cards

Hi, Can you please tell me the total amount of credit contained on cancelled Oyster cards, if possible can this be in two figures - the sum on cards cancelled unilaterally by TfL, and the sum on cards cancelled at the cardholders request. Thanks

Our ref: FOI-1007-2324/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 1 June 2023 asking for information about credit on cancelled Oyster cards.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy.

I can confirm that we do hold the information you require – no credit is held on cancelled Oyster cards.

Oyster cards are only cancelled at a customer’s request, cancellation is either done at a ticket machine if the balance is £10 or less, so that a refund can be issued in cash, or it is done via the contact centre, who instigate a refund.  Therefore there are no retained funds from cancelled Oyster cards.

TfL does not instigate the cancellation of Oyster cards, it is only done at the customer’s request.
