We answered

Thank you for your email received by us on 28 July 2017 asking for information about Oyster card ticket inspections and readers.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked for the following:

1. Please explain what ticket card readers reveal when an inspector checks both Oyster card and Contactless card's when it is taped against the gadget i.e. date of birth, address etc?

I can advise that Bus Revenue Protection Inspectors (RPIs) use a Revenue Inspection Device (RID) to read Contactless Payment Cards and Oyster cards. Once the card is read by the machine there are a number of screens the RPIs can view that show the following where applicable:

o If the card has been tapped on the bus

o If the card is valid for that journey

o Bus route, date and time of last journey and recent journey history

o Discount entitlement and expiry date

o Oyster card number

o The credit deducted for this journey or if the Pay As You Go (PAYG) is capped

o Pass type i.e. Travelcard

o Pass details, for example purchase location and price

o Zones of validity

o PAYG credit

o Time, date and location of last PAYG top up

o Pay As You Go value added from last top up only

o Contactless Payment Cards tap reference number

o Photocard number

2. Please explain how inspectors know if someone is using someone else's adult weekly, monthly and annual season ticket?

If the pass requires a Photocard, a visual inspection will show whether the pass is used by the person on the Photocard. Checks are also made to ensure the Photocard numbers match those on the pass itself.
