Traffic Signals in Wandsworth

Request ID: FOI-1003-2021
Date published: 28 September 2020

You asked

Follow on from FOI-0990-2021: a) Range of retiming changes in seconds - the seconds you talk about, is this the extra green time cars have in one whole cycle or is there more to it ? Do pedestrians get any longer/a quicker cycle of the lights with the same time to then cross? b) Also, who requested and authorised the retiming of the Lights for the LTN schemes (if this needs another FOI, please take this email as that!) - what reasoning was given for the request.

Our Ref:         FOI-1003-2021

Thank you for your request received on 7 September 2020 asking for further information about traffic signals in the London Borough of Wandsworth.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked:

a) Range of retiming changes in seconds - the seconds you talk about, is this the extra green time cars have in one whole cycle or is there more to it ? Do pedestrians get any longer/a quicker cycle of the lights with the same time to then cross?

The number of seconds is the change in the maximum amount of time that pedestrians wait to cross the road.

Where pedestrians cross the road when all traffic is stopped then pedestrians will get the same amount of time to cross the road as before the changes to signal timings were made. At junctions where pedestrians cross the road at the same time as traffic movements get a green signal then pedestrians may get a different amount of time to cross. This is because the amount of green time for traffic varies based on vehicle demand and so may change cycle by cycle. Therefore if vehicles receive more green time so will some pedestrian movements.

b) Also, who requested and authorised the retiming of the Lights for the LTN schemes (if this needs another FOI, please take this email as that!) - what reasoning was given for the request.

Trinity road / Bellevue road sw17 junction
On answer B, have those traffic lights signal is been changed back now to reflect the increased traffic flow?

The authorisation for the changes to signal timings comes from the powers given in the GLA Act 1999.

The signal timings at the junction between Trinity Road, Bellevue Road and Burntwood Lane have been changed back to what was operating on street before the period of lockdown.
