FOI request detail

Policy regarding operators logos on vehicles.

Request ID: FOI-0987-1819
Date published: 07 August 2018

You asked

I would like to know about your policy on operators logos. Firstly can you please provide details of your policy of bus operators putting their logos on their bus vehicles that they operate. I am talking about companies like Abellio / Arriva / Go Ahead / Metroline / RATP / Stagecoach / Sullivan Buses / Tower Transit / Uno and all other companies that operate TFL contracted routes. I notice that most of them have their logos above the doors and at the front of the bus but i am interested in what the policy is and what restrictions there are. For example: • Are there restrictions on how many logos can be put on their buses? • Are there restrictions on where on the bus the logo must be or can't be located? • Are there restrictions on the size of the logo? • Are there any other restrictions? To clarify i am talking about logos like in these photos for example on the exterior of the bus (and not just the symbol of the logo but also the text of the logo): • Abellio - https://flic.kr/p/GB4uZ4 • Arriva - https://flic.kr/p/22Bp8J • Metroline - https://flic.kr/p/r84XSJ • Stagecoach - https://flic.kr/p/Ys6f4S Secondly i would like to know the same but for your railway services that are contracted: Croydon Tram (First Group) Docklands Light Railway (Amey Keolis) London Overground (Arriva Group) TFL Rail (MTR Group) Unlike your contracted bus routes i notice that these services have no logos or anything to show who is operating the service. So i would like to know are the operators of these four services listed above allowed to put their logos (again i am referring to the full logo with their symbol and their text) on their trains and trams if they wish to? If the answer is yes then please tell me the following: • Are there restrictions on how many logos can be put on their trains or trams? • Are there restrictions on where on the train or tram the logo must be or can't be located? • Are there restrictions on the size of the logo? • Are there any other restrictions?

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 9 July 2018 asking for information about buses.

Your request has been processed in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you requested. You asked:

Can you please provide details of your policy of bus operators putting their logos on their bus vehicles that they operate.

Our current guidance states operators can have their company logos above the passenger front door and in the same position on the off side of the vehicle over the driver’s cab. We are looking to clarify branding further with bus operators as there has been the introduction of symbols elsewhere on vehicles. We expect the new guidance to come into effect shortly, once we have briefed bus operators on the changes. We don’t have a policy but this revised guidance will be much clearer in specifying where logos can and can’t go.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,

Melissa Nichols
