Thank you for your request received on 5 July 2018 asking for information about the air extraction/ventilation units on the London Underground.
 
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked:
 
1.    How many air extraction/ventilation units are there on the London Underground system?
 
One hundred and twenty three ventilation shafts.
 
2.    Approximately how much air does each unit pump in and out and at what rate?
 
This is dependent on location, circa 5 m^3/s – 80 m^3/s.
 
3.    Approximately what does it cost TFL to operate this air quality system?
 
We do not hold a breakdown of operating costs for this system.
 
4.    Who is responsible at TFL for the system?
 
The system is owned and operated by London Underground.
 
5.    Is TFL open to proposals from companies about how to use the air being removed, ‘cleaning’ it of CO2 and using the CO2 as a renewable source of energy? If so, to whom should proposals be directed?
