Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 18 July 2022, asking for information about penalty charge notices (PCNs).

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked:

1. For the calendar year 2021 please state how many Penalty Charge Notices have been issued because of box junction contraventions?

In 2021 we issued 91,463 PCNs for yellow box junction contraventions on the TfL Road Network.

2. What has been the cost of a PCN for this type of offence in 2021?

In 2021 PCNs were payable at £130, reduced to £65 if paid within 14 or 21 days (as stated on the PCN). On 17 January 2022 the PCN amount increased to £160, reduced to £80 for prompt payment. All money raised from PCNs is reinvested into ongoing improvements in London’s transport infrastructure.
