Thank you for your email of 13 July 2017, asking for information about Santander Cycles. I am sorry for the delay in replying.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

Please see the table below showing the numbers of cycles decommissioned due to being broken, lost or stolen. The system reported total bikes column outlines the number of bikes we have had in operation per annum; this total includes the bikes that were decommissioned per year.

  • Lost bikes are those which have been not been docked for at least 14 days since hire; this can happen if a bike is incorrectly docked or is taken or abandoned by the user. Bikes that go missing very often end up being docked at a later date, so the number of bikes permanently lost will be lower. The bike must have been missing for three months or more before it is considered for replacement.

  • Broken bikes are those which are beyond economical repair, although parts are often used to repair other bikes.

The below table shows how many have been reported to us as vandalised bikes per year, this is inclusive of those which have been subsequently retrieved. Any that are deemed beyond economical repair are included in the total of broken bikes in the above table and those that can be repaired are returned to the scheme.

Those recovered from canals or rivers are included in the broken section of the above table.
