Thank you for your clarified request received by us on 2 July 2024. You asked for information about injuries involving cycle hire bicycles, between March 2020 to March 2022.  

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. 

Between March 2020 and March 2022, a total of 136 injuries were reported to TfL involving Santander Cycle users. Of these 38 involved the emergency services and may have resulted in a hospital visit. 

We work closely with all emergency services to ensure it is made aware of incidents involving Santander Cycles. We undertake a full assessment of each incident including the quarantining and inspection of the bike involved after each incident. 

During the period in question, 20.3 million cycles were hired. Reported accidents involving customer injuries represent less than 0.001% of all hires.
