Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 26 June 2018 asking for information about the Purley Way box junction.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked for the following:

I can advise that box junction markings are governed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions, which were radically overhauled in 2016.

The 2016 Regulations relaxed the design rules for box junction road markings to allow for markings to be designed to cover all situations at junctions without the need for Department for Transport (DfT) authorisation. The box junction at this location is therefore fully compliant with the requirements set out within the current Regulations. As such, DfT authorisation is not required.

DfT authorisation was granted to TfL for this box junction under the previous Regulations (the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 and as amended 2011), which is available on the DfT website via: http://assets.dft.gov.uk/trafficauths/case-2981.pdf

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.
