We answered

TfL Ref: 0809-2223

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8 July 2022 asking for information about works on noise reduction between Camden Town and Kentish Town stations.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked: Could you please detail all works in the past year to reduce noise on the Northern Line between Camden Town Station and Kentish Town Station.  Could you also detail any planned works for the aforementioned section of track.

Rail grinding last took place on this section of track between Camden and Kentish Town on 29th and 30th March 2021 to tackle the in-tunnel noise. Pandrol Vanguard (PV) has been installed to address ground borne noise, however this has resulted in unintended in tunnel noise

To mitigate noise further, we have now implemented a speed restriction in this section to reduce the in-tunnel noise until further rail grinding is able to be carried out. This has already reportedly had an impact and reduced the noise.

The ultimate plan, is to remove the track componentry which is causing the loud in-tunnel noise, and replace it with a suitable solution that will reduce in-tunnel noise but not increase ground borne noise however this is still in the early stages of development. The grinder is next due on the Northern Line early next year.
