Our ref: FOI-0787-2425
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 07 June 2024 asking for information about bus stop countdowns.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy.
I can confirm that we do hold the information you require. You asked:
1. how many bus stop countdowns have been put up altogether and how many have been removed across london (2010-2023)?
Between 2011 and 2023, a total of 3050 Countdown signs were installed.
Between 2011 and 2023, a total of 98 Countdown signs were permanently removed from their allocated locations due to operational reasons. However, please note that the majority of the Countdown signs were relocated to alternative locations.
The rollout of the current generation of Countdown signs commenced in 2011. This involved replacing the older technology signs (approximately 2000 signs) with 2,500 new and improved signs at key bus stops in London. Sites that previously had the older Countdown signs received new Countdown signs so that they retained the facility. As rollout commenced in 2011, we have provided answers to your questions covering the period 2011 – 2023.
2. Why don’t temporary bus stops get created nearby when a bus stop needs to be closed (eg for road works whereby the road isn’t closed and traffic continues to flow)?
We aim to locate temporary bus stops as close to closed bus stops as possible. However, this is heavily dependent on identifying a suitable location where intending passengers can safely congregate, and buses can safely service the stop.
If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely,
