Legible London
Request ID: FOI-0785-2021
Date published: 02 September 2020
You asked
I would like to request a copy of the ‘Legible London Visual Design Standard’ guide. It is referenced in your ‘Legible London System Architecture’ document, version 1, 2010. I believe the guide has a yellow cover, if this helps.
We answered
Our Ref: FOI-0785-2021
Thank you for your request received on 8 August 2020 asking for a copy of the Legible London visual design standard.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.
In accordance with the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply the requested information as it is subject to a statutory exemption to the right of access to information under section 43(2) – prejudice to commercial interests.
In this instance the exemption has been applied as disclosure of the information you have requested could prejudice our commercial interests. The manuals have been sold to other transport authorities around the world to allow them to deliver Legible London in their regions (https://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/transport-for-london-designs-hong-kong-street-signs-in-a-bid-to-get-people-walking-a3902566.html). Disclosing the manuals would mean that the revenue obtained from these sales would no longer be generated.
The use of this exemption is subject to an assessment of the public interest in relation to the disclosure of the information concerned. TfL recognises the need for openness and transparency by public authorities but in this instance the public interest in ensuring we are able to maintain this revenue stream outweighs the general public interest in increasing transparency of our processes.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please feel free to contact me.
The impact of current circumstances on TfL’s resources means we are not able to answer FOI requests readily and we ask that you please do not make a request to us at present.
Answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. In any event, please note that our response time will be affected by the current situation.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
