Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15 June 2019.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked for:

- the total number of rolling stock (total no. of cars) on the DLR that are in useable condition

We currently have 149 vehicles in the DLR fleet, 148 of which are in a useable condition.

- the total no. of cars in operation at peak times (between 06:30am-09:30am and between16:00pm-19:00pm)

- AM peak: 131

- PM peak: 123

- the total no. of cars normally in operation at other off-peak times (between 09:30am-16:00pm and after 19:00pm)

- Off-peak: 102

- Evenings: 94

- if there is the ability to a) increase the number of DLR trains at peak times and b) increase the no. of cars forming the current trains at peak times (considering the no. of stock available, ability of signalling, capacity of the lines, length of platforms, etc.)

Yes, however, this ability is very limited. The number of vehicles actually available for use in passenger service on any given day varies, typically, between 135- 138. Five vehicles are safe-guarded from the daily allocation as they are undergoing compulsory heavy maintenance, and a further three are out of service undergoing essential project work. This is necessary for the ongoing safe and reliable running of the fleet. In addition, a number of vehicles can be out of service for reactive maintenance related to day-to-day train faults and damage, and this number varies daily depending on the issues and how many vehicles are impacted.

On occasion, the number of vehicles available has not been able to meet the AM peak requirement. Unfortunately, the complexities of the network mean it is difficult to simply insert trains into the existing timetable.
