We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-0770-1920
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 14th June 2019 asking for information about declined contactless payments.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
You asked:
“Please could you provide a count of the number of contactless cards which had a payment declined resulting in the card being marked as not authorised for travel for each day in the period between 2019-06-03 and 2019-06-16 inclusive (14 counts in total).”
The information, so far as we hold it, is shown in the table below. Note that this represents the number of contactless cards marked as not authorised for travel by day - we are unable to confirm if the contactless card was marked as not authorised for travel specifically because a payment was declined (which is just one of various reasons why a card may not be authorised – the main reasons being that the card issuer has reported to TfL that a card is lost or stolen, or because the card has an unpaid travel charge (debt to TfL), largely due to the card being expired or because it has insufficient funds). Note also that due to a systems incident on 14th June 2019 there were no cards added to the ‘deny list’, so the figure of nil shown for that day is correct.
