You asked

Please could you provide me with the total amount of money spent by TfL on external training and attending conferences from 01/06/2016 – 01/06/2017

We answered

Thank you for your email received by us on 27 June 2017 asking for information about the total amount of money spent by Transport For London (TfL) on external training and attending conferences from 1 June 2016 to 1 June 2une 2017.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

Please see the following table for the requested information, which excludes Professional Sponsorship and Internal Training spend extracted from our SAP database. Please note that this information has been identified from training related expenditure codes. Expenditure recorded under other expenditure codes may include elements of training. External expenditure over £250 is published on our website at: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transparency/#on-this-page-3

Business Area Spend
All Business Area/Cost Centre Training Spend £2,993,228.63
HR Owned Pan TfL Budget - External Training Spend £583,692.54
HR Owned Pan TfL Budget - Conferences £0.00
Other Cost Centre - External Training Spend £2,409,536.09
Other Cost Centre - Conferences £7,970.00
Graduate External £729,189.89
Apprentice External £93,993.00

The above table excludes expenditure for the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly London Underground lines, which prior to this financial year was part of infrastructure company Tubelines that had its own budget and separate purchasing system. The amount of money spent on external training during the requested period was £126,763.92 and no conference payments were made.

Through our pan TfL training budget we introduced a freeze on new sponsorship requests and limited external training in May 2016. As part of our ongoing savings programme, this freeze will remain in place for 2017/18. Under professional sponsorship we will continue to fund the following:

• Sponsorship for those on graduate and apprenticeship schemes
• Employees in years 3 or 4 of their course study, assuming they completed their previous year successfully

However, we are unable to process new requests for sponsorship and any other requests.

As for external training, we will continue to fund both safety critical external training and training that is absolutely essential to the running of our network.

I can advise that no other external training will be funded.

We are of course still committed to investing in our people, and HR will continue to identify the right and most cost-effective solutions for employees with training needs that are essential to their role.

We must ensure we get the best value for money for the training we deliver in house. The Learning and Development team provide a wide range of resources to support staff and teams are encouraged to take a look at the types of courses on offer internally along with the advice and guidance that we publish that provides a wide range of resources to support those looking for career and development advice.
