TfL Ref: FOI-0725-2122
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 13 July 2021 asking for information about road collisions involving e-scooters.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. Specifically you asked:
“Road Collisions involving e-scooters:
Numbers of reported road collisions involving e-scooters, either private or as part of the rental scheme, for the months of 1) May 2021 2) June 2021).”
TfL does not hold the requested information. Road collision data is collected by the police in line with Government requirements and is held by them. The latest police-reviewed road collision data we hold is to the end of March 2021 only. Furthermore, “e-scooter” is not currently a defined vehicle category by the Department for Transport (DfT), which sets the guidance for recording personal injury collision data. Rather, they are recorded as “other vehicles” - albeit a free text field can be completed that should contain details of the specific type of vehicle, such as an e-scooter. I understand that the DfT will be adding a new vehicle type - “personal electric mobility device” - to the guidance in the future. Notwithstanding the above, we do hold and can provide you with the following provisional data for January to March 2021 on the understanding that this will be subject to further data checks and validation: we are provisionally aware of 77 personal injury collisions involving an e scooter (59 slight injuries and 18 serious injuries). Details of e-scooter related collisions for 2020 can be found in our end of year factsheet here:
https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/electric-scooter-rental-trial Over the course of the trial further data will be published relating specifically to rental e-scooters, broken down by period. Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed. Yours sincerely,
