We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0706-1920

Thank you for your request of 6th June 2019 asking for information about TfL’s use of wheel nut movement and retention indicators/devices.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I have interpreted your request as relating to London’s fleet of buses. If it relates to TfL’s own fleet of vehicles (which inlcudes cars, vans, and LGV trucks) then please let me know and I can source further information.

Your questions are answered in turn below:

Question 1. How many vehicles are these fitted on and what percentage of the total fleet are they fitted on?

Answer: We do not hold details on the number of buses fitted with indicators in our contracted fleet (note that most bus services in London are run by private operators under a contract awarded by TfL). Operators will have different assurance strategies for keeping their vehicles in a good state of repair on top of drivers conducting mandatory walk-round checks before taking a vehicle into service, operators maintaining vehicles on a four to six weekly schedule and TfL conducting its own independent monitoring of around a quarter of the fleet each year.

Question 2. If fitted, how long have they been fitted and what has been your experience of these devices in respect of wheel security?

Answer: While we cannot confirm numbers, we do know from routine vehicle inspections that some are fitted and that operators see this as a commercially-viable investment. As TfL does not operate vehicles directly, we cannot comment on wheel security issues. We believe they have been in the fleet for at least 15 years.

Question 3. Is there a contact person in your technical or engineering dept. with whom I can discuss these devices?

Answer: Not at TfL, but you may wish to contact some of our larger operators such as Go Ahead, Arriva London, Metroline, and Abellio. See our webpage https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/buses/who-runs-your-bus for their contact details.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,

David Wells
