FOI request detail

Junction box at the intersection of Lewisham High Street / Longbridge Way

Request ID: FOI-0703-2122
Date published: 19 July 2021

You asked

In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act, I wish to request information regarding the yellow box junction on the intersection of Lewisham High Street / Longbridge Way. Can you advise how this box junction meets the requirements of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 (TSRGD) which are available to view using the following link: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/523916/DfT-circular-01-2016.pdf As noted, certain guidelines set by the Department for Transport are required to be met with the aim of “keeping the traffic moving”. This particular box junction does not meet these requirements, in fact it seems to have only been installed as a trap to raise revenue. Lewisham High Street is one-way traffic, as is Longbridge Way. There does not appear any good reason to install a box junction at this specific location and it seems to be holding up the traffic and not keeping it moving as is required by the regulations.

Our ref: FOI-0703-2122/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8 July 2021 asking for information about the junction box at the intersection of Lewisham High Street / Longbridge Way.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

Section 12.9 of the TSRGD, of which he has provided a link to,  outlines that

TSRGD 2016 allows full flexibility for box junction markings in terms of shape, outline and hatching angles and cut-outs for kerb line encroachment. The maximum overall dimension has been removed. Where the marking is placed on a road with priority for traffic in one direction, the maximum width of carriageway of 4.5 metres at its narrowest point still applies.

In light of this we are satisfied that this box meets the requirements in the TSRGD and that the box is legally compliant.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
