A1203 Limehouse Link Road speed cameras

Request ID: FOI-0703-1819
Date published: 10 July 2018

You asked

As previously stated, any update on my strong request to replace the spot cameras within the A1203 Limehouse Link Tunnel bores in both directions with average speed cameras, also if you can give me any data on the cameras (separate eastbound and westbound) of the number of offences on average per week/month/yearly, when each of these cameras were first deployed, the average speed daily, and the highest speeding offences.

We answered

Dear

TfL Ref: FOI-0703-1819

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 16 June 2018.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

As previously stated, any update on my strong request to replace the spot cameras within the A1203 Limehouse Link Tunnel bores in both directions with average speed cameras. Unfortunately, we do not hold this information. Offence data is owned by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and your specific query should be referred to them. Their contact details are available at https://www.met.police.uk/foi-ai/accessing-information/

We can however confirm that there are 6 digital spot speed cameras within the Limehouse Link tunnels and these were all installed in November 2003.

Transport for London (TfL) and the Mayor of London are committed to delivering a Vision Zero approach to road casualty reduction, to ultimately rid London's roads of death and serious injury. Following the end of the London Safety Camera Partnership in 2010, we have continued to fund, operate and maintain London’s safety camera network, which helps prevent a significant number of deaths and serious injuries each year.

We are currently upgrading old wet film cameras with new digital units through a safety camera replacement programme. This programme will help to maintain the benefit of the safety camera network to Londoners into the future. Due to this ongoing programme, no new safety camera sites are currently being considered for installation. However the Mayor’s Vision Zero Action Plan, due to be published in July will include more information on our approach to tackling speed and dangerous driving and the future role of safety cameras.

We work in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to undertake many speed management and enforcement initiatives. The public can report dangerous, illegal, or antisocial road user behavior directly to the police via their online reporting tool, RoadSafe London. Every report helps the police and us to understand where and when bad road user behavior takes place. The information and intelligence gathered via this tool is used to inform the activity of the police and partners. The tool is available online at https://www.met.police.uk/report/report-a-road-traffic-incident/

Safety cameras are only one of the ways to tackle speed related deaths and serious injuries on our roads. We regularly deploy specialist police officers from the MPS to monitor the behaviour of motorists using the tunnels and will continue to keep these deployments under review.
