Thank you for your email received on 10 June 2017 asking for information about Private Hire (PH) drivers and vehicles. I apologise for the delay in replying to you.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our Information Access Policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked for:

(1) The latest figure of private hire vehicles that are not registered (& cannot accept a private booking) with a licensed PH operator

(2) if costs permit, similarly the number of PH drivers not registered with a PH operator

For the week ending 10 January 2017, the number of unique private hire drivers and vehicles that were working, or that were available to work for a private hire operator, consisted of 63,732 drivers and 64,424 vehicles. This number is based on data provided by private hire operators and is subject to change following further analysis and verification of the data we receive.

In the same week we recorded 117,475 drivers and 86, 404 vehicles as holding a current private hire licence.
