Dear

TfL Ref: FOI-0641-1819

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 10 June 2018.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked:

On the Bakerloo line between 1 JAN 2016 TO 31 DEC 2017 how many Signals have been passed at danger due to driver error

A total of 80.

The safety of our passengers and staff is our top priority. The number of these incidents is low in comparison with the number of passenger journeys and the distance travelled.

Signal passed at danger (SPAD) are low risk safety incidents due to the fact that there are significant gaps beyond signals based on the maximum stopping distance for the stock. Although signals passed at danger represent a very low safety risk, they still result in disruption to the train service.

We have an extensive and on-going SPAD reduction programme in place that is regularly refreshed. This ensures that the competence of our train operators and the effectiveness of SPAD related procedural controls are to ever higher standards. This programme is progressively reducing the number of SPADs, helping to improve service reliability and mitigate yet further the already very low residual safety risks arising from SPADs.

which signal or site has had the most SPADS occurred ?

Signal A395 near Regent’s Park, southbound (8).

What is the maximum number of SPADS a driver can have before he/she face disciplinary action ?

We do not have a single process that we manage train operators to, we manage them based on either their previous safety record or the severity of the individual incident and any associated rule book breaches.

To support this we have an internal management system which details the standards expected of train operators. In addition to this we have a disciplinary process which may be used if rules have been broken.

Does all London underground Rolling stock contain train sets which contain de-icing units ? /IF NO WHICH STOCK DO NOT

The Waterloo and City and Victoria line trains do not have de-icing equipment as they only run underground.

Does the Bakerloo line 1972 contain de- icing units if so how many trains set are fitted with the equipment are pictures of the equipment would be appreciated

On the rest of the fleet only a portion of the trains are usually de-icer and is dependent on how much of the line is above ground. On the Bakerloo line, we have 36 trains of which 11 are fitted with de-icing equipment.

what does De icing equipment consist off and is it automatically operated or manually (by means of driving physically turning the system on at certain locations and does the operation differ on rolling stock.

The de-icing equipment consists of sleet brushes and a spray of de-icing fluid and is operated automatically.

on the 1972 stock the traction brake controller has 3 power steps Shunt, Series ,Parallel what does each of these steps do and do they affect the train maximum speed or acceleration.

The 3 traction positions Shunt, Series and Parallel refer to the resistor banks that the power passes through to reach the motors.

    • Shunt being the slowest as the power passes through all resistors meaning a lower voltage reaches the motors.
    • Series is the next step up, here the power passes through a large resistor grid configured “in series”.
    • Parallel is the final step, here the power passes through a smaller resistor grid configured “in parallel”.
    • Shunt & Parallel steps have intermediate stages which are controlled automatically to give a gradual application of power.

what is the maximum speed 1972 tube stock is capable of.

The 1972 stock trains max speed is 45 MPH. As the stops are around 2 minutes between stations, trains can rarely build up to this speed before having to slow for the next station stop.

On all London Undeground rolling stock only the first driving car has trip cocks lowered is this correct and are the tripocks lowered on both the left and right side of the first car

Not all LU rolling stock has tripcocks, On the 72TS the tripcock is fitted on the right hand side of the leading cabs. All middle cabs have been modified to remove the tripcocks to prevent accidental activation causing delays.
