TfL Ref: EIR-0608-2021
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 13th July 2020 asking for information about noise from the London Underground.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“Following Tube noise complaints caused by an IRJ as investigated and ascertained in TFL's Technical Services - Noise & Vibration reference R2776, and further correspondence between TFL and the Mayor Of London office (reference MGLA070420-8046), please provide the ATMS vibration measurements for the IRJs on the Hammersmith & City line left hand rail at M122/MIRLO 1,120 and 1,124m between January 2017 and June 2020.
Please also provide the number of complaints received in 2018, 2019 and 2020 for Tube noise disturbance by residents of Acton Street and Frederick Street, WC1, London.”
I can confirm that we hold the information you require.
The vibration measurements are provided in the attached spreadsheet (note that you may need to expand the width of some columns to see the data in full). There is a minimum and maximum dB for each location as the sample is taken over 1m of rail. There is a slight increase in the maximum from 2017 to 2020 but we do not consider this to be a significant or sudden change.
In terms of the number of complaints received, our Customer Services team have reported that two complaints were received from Acton Street in December 2019. One complaint was also received from Swinton Street (one street away from Acton Street) in February 2020. There is no record of any other complaints from Acton Street or Frederick Street back to the beginning of 2018.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
On a more general matter, please note that the impact of current circumstances on TfL’s resources means we are not able to answer FOI requests readily and we ask that you please do not make a request to us at present.
Answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. In any event, please note that our response time will be affected by the current situation.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely,
