You asked
Freedom Passes and the retention of journey data with TFL.
I wish to know the following information regarding Freedom Passes and the retention of
journey data with TFL:
1. Why is there no facilities online at the TFL Freedom Pass page for a holder of a Freedom
Pass to access their journey history?
2. How long does TFL hold journey history for in respect of passengers who use a Freedom
Pass?
3. If there is a time limit, how is the journey history data deleted and who deletes it?
We answered
TfL Ref: 0594-1920
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 24 May 2019 asking for information about Freedom Passes and retention of journey data.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.
1. The Freedom Pass scheme is owned and administered by London Councils on behalf of all London boroughs. TfL provides the cards but we do not hold the personal data of individual card holders – that data is held by London Councils. We would therefore have no means of verifying that an online account holder was the Freedom Pass holder with legitimate reason to access journey history. We can provide information on journey history on request, where we follow a process of identity verification that includes a review of the front and back of the card and a proof of address. These are provided to us by card holders themselves, or via a third party, if for example a Power Of Attorney is in place.
2. Journey history associated with an individual card is held for 8 weeks.
3. Journey history data is not deleted but it is depersonalised, i.e. it is not associated with an individual card number. This is an automated process.
If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
