We answered

TfL Ref: 0594-1819 follow up to 0464-1819

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 4 June 2018 asking for information about bus operator fines.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

We do not fine bus operators for service failures as such. The penalty imposed is that the bus operators do not receive the income streams or bonuses that they would otherwise have got.  On the driver modules element, we don’t fine operators for this but we recover costs if modules don’t work and we lose income from fares as a result.

If the bus operators consistently fall below the standards expected, they would cease to be the preferred supplier to us and if this involved safety the Traffic Commissioner might separately revoke or restrict their operating licence.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
