Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 13 June 2017 asking for information about insurance claims covering “Boris Bikes” for the period July 2011 to July 2016.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

Please find below the requested information:

How many claims were made on the insurance policy covering riders of “Boris Bikes”?

139 claims have been passed to our insurers to deal with.

How much were these claims settled for in total?

We have settled 126 claims for this period, and paid out a total of £234,136.27.

How many claims were for injury only?

26 (please note the classification by insurers reflects the primary type of loss, but may include elements of damage as well)

How many claims were for damage only?

113 (please note the classification by insurers reflects the primary type of loss, but may include elements of injury as well)

How many claims were then passed to the riders insurance for subrogation?

3 claims have been successfully passed on by insurers to the riders’ household policies with recoveries made. Two of these were in relation to property damage and one related to an injury claim. They are included in the settled figures as above.
