We answered
TfL Ref: 0573-1920
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 27 May 2019 asking for information about Air Quality in London since the introduction of the ULEZ.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. You asked: Can you please tell me by how much the air pollution has changed since the introduction of UELZ charge.
Unfortunately we do not hold the information you have requested as the monitoring and data collection is still in progress for the central London Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ). It is essential to collect data over a period of time to understand the impacts of the scheme and the effects that variables such as the weather conditions may have on pollution concentrations. No conclusions can be drawn at present but TfL will be reporting on the benefits of the ULEZ in due course.
Although we do not have information on the changes to air pollution the ULEZ is already having an impact. Thousands of motorists have started to change their behaviour by driving less polluting vehicles into the area, and using cleaner transport alternatives including walking or cycling, and public transport. Our data does show that in the first month of the ULEZ there were around 9,400 fewer older, more polluting vehicles in the zone than on the average day.
We expect the ULEZ and other actions to reduce harmful nitrogen oxides emissions from road transport by around 45 percent in central London.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
