Trafic modelling for the bus gate on Chiswick High Road - CS9
Request ID: FOI-0566-2122 Date published: 05 July 2021
You asked
A new bus gate was installed on Chiswick High Road before the junction of Acton Lane, as part of the installation of the 'temporary' version of CS9. This was not part of the original plan for CS9 and was not subject to any formal consultation. I would like to know what traffic modelling was undertaken for the impact of this bus gate, and any safety assessment given the loss of cycle lane on the westbound carriageway at this location

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 18th June 2021 asking for information about a bus gate on Chiswick High Road.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“A new bus gate was installed on Chiswick High Road before the junction of Acton Lane, as part of the installation of the 'temporary' version of CS9. This was not part of the original plan for CS9 and was not subject to any formal consultation. I would like to know what traffic modelling was undertaken for the impact of this bus gate, and any safety assessment given the loss of cycle lane on the westbound carriageway at this location.”
As part of the temporary C9 scheme, LINSIG modelling was undertaken for the all junctions within the scheme extent on the Chiswick High Road. The modelling highlighted the potential for queuing on the eastbound direction which would cause delays to bus services travelling through the scheme. As a result of the modelling, the bus gate was implemented as mitigation to provide a tool for traffic to be regulated into the scheme extent to protect bus journey times.
The bus gate has been designed according to national design guidance. In advance of the westbound advisory cycle lane, the westbound lane width is also designed to TfL and national design guidance to enable cyclists to adopt the primary riding position in the lane. The implemented layout has undergone thorough, independent safety reviews at each stage of design and after the completion of construction, as is standard practice on all highway schemes
