Between 4 July 2020 and 7 June 2021, how many customers faced enforcement action as a result of their failure to wear a face covering. Under the freedom of information act I would like to request this information expressed as a percentage of the total number of customers over this period please.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 17 June 2021, asking for the percentage of customers that were stopped for not wearing a face covering.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.
During the period between 4 July 2020 and 7 June 2021, we estimate there were around 23.7m distinct customers seen across the entire TfL network. This means less than 1% (193,766) of customers were stopped by TfL enforcement officers and asked to put masks on before boarding.
Please note this estimate is based on taps made by Oyster and Contactless payment cards.
