FOI request detail

Staff working on the London underground

Request ID: FOI-0482-2324
Date published: 01 June 2023

You asked

I am wondering if you had any statistics on the number of employees who work within the London underground. I have looked online but can only find data on the number TFL staff, but need a more specific number of staff that work specifically underground rather than staff that may work within offices. The research proposal is fictional however I do require genuine data. If you could help me with any of these statistics or provide me with any links to this data, I would be extremely grateful.

Our ref: FOI-0482-2324/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 18 May 2023 asking for information about staff working on London Underground.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

I can advise you that currently we have 12,169 operational staff working on London Underground. Operational staff are not based in offices, they include station staff, engineers and train operators.  We are unable to provide the number of staff that work underground, as we do not record information in this way. Much of London Underground’s stations and tracks are actually not underground.

I hope you will find this information useful, but if this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
