We are committed to do everything in our power to make London’s streets safer. In line with Vision Zero, our goal is to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries from
London’s streets by 2041. Under a Vision Zero approach we will focus on reducing the dominance of motor vehicles on our streets and we
will ensure that road danger reduction is central to all transport-related activity.
Unfortunately, we only hold some of the information you have requested. As there has not been a scheme at this location since 2017 there are no road safety audits. However, since the collisions in question we have obtained funding and set up a scheme to deliver improvements to the pedestrian crossing at Brompton Road/ Brompton Square, which is due for delivery this year.
The scheme, which is currently in feasibility design, will make improvements to the pedestrian crossing at Brompton Road/ Brompton Square by modernising the signals to include pedestrian countdown. Designs for this are not yet complete but we have secured funding to deliver the changes this financial year. In addition to this in early 2019 we made a change to increase the green man time for pedestrians from 6 seconds to 9 seconds.
In early discussions we considered upgrading the pedestrian crossing to a straight across crossing rather than a staggered crossing. However this would involve loss of traffic lanes in both directions and so the scope for this project became too much for our limited resources. At some point in the future we would like to review Brompton Road as a whole and improve provision for vulnerable road users, however at this time we felt the most important aspect was to make the changes that we have resources for as quickly as possible.
I have attached the relevant emails we hold in relation to the scheme.
Please note that in accordance with TfL’s obligations under Data Protection legislation some personal data has been removed, as required by section 40(2) of the FOI Act. This is because disclosure of this personal data would be a breach of the legislation, specifically the first principle which requires all processing of personal data to be fair and lawful. It would not be fair to disclose this personal information when the individuals have no expectation it would be disclosed and TfL has not satisfied one of the conditions which would make the processing ‘fair’.
This exemption to the right of access to information is an absolute exemption and not subject to an assessment of whether the public interest favours use of the exemption.
Attached is also our collisions listing, showing details of the two collisions in question.
