You asked

Follow-up to FOI-0233-2223: Thanks for this response - really helpful. Is it possible to ask a quick follow-up question or would I need to go through the FOI again? My question would be… Of the 6 incidents that resulted in injury did any of them involve cars speeding or resulting from dangerous driving and in particular did the serious injury result from a car speeding or dangerous driving?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0445-2223

Thank you for your further request of 25th May 2022.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

In reference to the previous case under reference FOI-0233-2223 you asked:

Of the 6 incidents that resulted in injury did any of them involve cars speeding or resulting from dangerous driving and in particular did the serious injury result from a car speeding or dangerous driving?”.

The reporting of collisions falls into two categories: those that are attended by the police, and those that are not as they are self-reported by the public.  Where collisions are not attended by the police there is no record of ‘contributory factors’. Contributory factor information is only assigned by a police officer at the scene of the collision. For police attended collisions it is possible for an officer to record up to six contributory factors. These records reflect the reporting officer's opinion at the time of reporting and are not necessarily the result of extensive investigation. Furthermore, it is recognised that subsequent enquiries could lead to the reporting officer changing their opinion.

With this in mind, of the six collisions referred to in the previous request only two were police attended and therefore have contributory factors recorded.

The first collision involved a slight injury to a car driver and the following contributory factors were recorded: 605 (learner or inexperienced driver), 109 (animal or object in carriageway), 409 (swerved) and 403 (poor turn or manoeuvre). These were recorded in respect of the car diver, with no other vehicles involved.

The second collision with contributory factors recorded involved a serious injury to a child pedestrian who was injured by a car. Two contributory factors were recorded against the car driver as follows: 406 (failed to judge other person’s path or speed) and 508 (driver using mobile phone).

None were recorded with speeding as contributory factors.

You may be interested to see the DfT STATS20 instructions here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/stats19-forms-and-guidance which includes the list of potential contributory factors.
