Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 9 May 2019 asking for information about service publicity costs.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

The cost associated with the car line diagrams (inside the tube trains) varies accordingly depending on the line being updated, and whether the update requires a new diagram or just adding a sticker.

For the January 2016 update, when Zones 2/3 were introduced, the costs from our budget records for the Tube map items you have listed are as follows:

  • Car line diagram design - £820

  • Car line diagram tacky back lamination - £50,000 (note, these are group costs for all car line diagram updates at that time, not exclusively Zones 2/3-related updates)

  • M1X Tube maps installation - £7,875 (note, this cost relates to a product that has since been discontinued)

  • Quad Royal Tube map design - £840

  • Quad Royal and M1X Tube maps printing - £1,694.70

  • Central London Tube map tacky back lamination - £54,487.65

  • Central London Tube map printing - £4,954.95

  • Central London Tube map design - £1,350

The cost of the spider bus maps depends on the number of copies that are printed and displayed and this number depends on  the area. The average cost for updating one spider map (design, print and posting) is around £1,000 (for the old type) and £1,500 (for the new type). The cost of the new type reduces after the initial major changes have been made.
