FOI request detail

Cycleway 9

Request ID: FOI-0311-2223
Date published: 06 June 2022

You asked

I was delighted to see the press release that Chiswick High St air had become cleaner and that there were more cyclists cycling on it since C9 provisionally opened. Would you have any more complete or precise data eg outputs from local monitoring stations for the last few years or cyclist numbers and accident severity for the last few years ? In and around Chiswick, 5 years would be great.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0311-2223

Thank you for your clarified request which we received on 12 May 2022, asking for information about Cycleway 9 in Chiswick.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. Specifically you asked:

Would you have any more complete or precise data e.g. outputs from local monitoring stations for the last few years or cyclist numbers and accident severity for the last few years?

Please find the attached zip file providing recent count data to the end of February 2022 for the digital cameras we have on the CS9 Chiswick Cycleway. They count cyclists and other modes of traffic. The attached maps provide locations for these count lines.

Please note the primary nature of the Goldhawk Road count lines 22097 and 22082 is to record vehicles on the main carriageway and therefore the focus is on these.

Furthermore, this cycle lane is undergoing construction work including the site at the junction of King Street and Goldhawk Road, as shown in the attached file. The current construction work has contributed to outages and variances in the data. When this is completed the cameras will be repositioned and new count lines will be set up to capture the key flows at this junction. When this is completed we will start a new data series of cycle counts.

With regard to accident statistics, it is too soon to accurately assess the impact of the scheme, due to the variance in numbers. Within TfL we use a benchmark of at least three or more years of data to be able to judge the schemes impact on cycle safety. Therefore we have not collected this data yet.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
