TfL Ref: 0299-1920

Thank you for your request received by us on 30 April and 17 May 2019 asking for information about fuel consumption by London Buses and targets for the replacement of vehicles.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked for:

an overview of fuel consumption by operator and/or route for buses operating on TfL routes and for TfL owned vehicles. A year on year comparison over three years would be good but whatever is deemed reasonable.

Whilst buses use around 18,300,000 litres of diesel a month, the above information is held by bus operating companies rather than Transport for London. If you would like to contact the operators directly, their details can be found via the following link to our website:

However, please note that private companies are not legally obliged to respond under Freedom of Information Act legislation.
any targets for replacement of hydrocarbon fueled vehicles with electric equivalents
In reference to hydrocarbon fuel, we assume that you are referring to conventional diesel. We are upgrading the diesel fleet to the ultra-clean Euro VI standard to help reduce the most harmful tailpipe emissions. We are almost 80 per cent there and the remaining vehicles will be raised to this level between now and the latter part of 2020. Our ultimate aim is to have an entirely zero-emission fleet no later than 2037. There are 150 zero emission London Buses so far and we anticipate pure electric and hydrogen fuel-cell moving more into line with conventional diesel to get us there. The following audit reports may also be off interest at: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/bus-fleet-data-and-audits

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
