Request ID: FOI-0292-2223 Date published: 30 May 2022
You asked
Hi,
I am enquiring regarding the permission to install electrical devices on the lampposts. I am a student carrying out a study to clarify what procedures are required for an electrical appliance to be installed at a lamppost which makes use of the current infrastructure.
I would really appreciate it if you can provide me with details of how many lamp posts you currently have with live licenses as well as annual costs? This is so I can determine if the current licenses can be utilised rather than going through the process of purchasing a new license
Look forward to hearing from you
Additional request received 12/05/2022: Can I outline if you are able to provide data on how many lamposts currently have active license licenses and the ones aren’t ?
I would also like to take this opportunity for TFL to comment on their opinion on lampost ev charging, what issues they may come across and any barriers that may stop making use of the current infrastructure

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 9th May 2022 asking for information about electric vehicle charging lampposts. Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“I am enquiring regarding the permission to install electrical devices on the lampposts. On 12th May 2022 you added to the request as follows:
“I would also like to take this opportunity for TFL to comment on their opinion on lampost ev charging, what issues they may come across and any barriers that may stop making use of the current infrastructure”.
I am afraid that TfL does not hold the data requested in the first part of your request. TfL does not deliver lamppost electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Rather, London Councils is supporting London boroughs to deliver EV on-street residential charging infrastructure, including lamppost column charge points. More information can be found on the London Councils’ website here:
You may also wish to approach individual London boroughs regarding their experience of installing lamppost column charge points.
Note that TfL recently published London’s 2030 Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy, which sets out what is needed to ensure enough EV infrastructure in London by 2030 and how TfL will work with the wider public sector and private sector to achieve this. The strategy can be found at https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/electric-vehicles-and-rapid-charging
