Female bus drivers in the UK

Request ID: FOI-0285-2425
Date published: 09 May 2024

You asked

How many female bus drivers in london and in the uk.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0285-2425

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 23rd April 2024 asking for information about female bus drivers.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

How many female bus drivers in london and in the uk.”

Please note, TfL is responsible for the provision of transport (including the majority of bus services) in London only, rather than the rest of the UK.

In regard to buses in London, these are operated by private companies under contract with TfL, and they employ their drivers directly. TfL therefore holds only a limited amount of information on this subject. We are aware that a Labour Force Survey reported in 2020/21 that 16 per cent of bus and coach drivers were female (up from seven per cent in 2019/20). Further, across a sample of four London bus operators in 2020, around 9-11% of their total staff were female.

If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,
