Hi,
On your rolling stock data sheets, it mentions:
'Maximum average load standing capacity'
'Maximum full load standing capacity'
'Theoretical crush standing capacity...'
Could you advise how these figures are calculated?

Dear
TfL Ref: FOI-0284-1819
Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 4 May 2018.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked:
On your rolling stock data sheets, it mentions:
'Maximum average load standing capacity'
'Maximum full load standing capacity'
'Theoretical crush standing capacity...'
Could you advise how these figures are calculated?
The standing capacities are calculated by working out the floor area in each carriage of the train and then dividing each figure on a per car basis as follows;
Maximum average load standing capacity = car area divided by 5 persons per square metre;
Maximum full load standing capacity = car area divided by 6 persons per square metre;
Theoretical crush standing capacity = car area divided by 7 persons per square metre;
In each case the number of complete passengers per car are then added together to give the total number of complete per train.
Please note that for calculating the maximum average load and maximum full load standing capacities the following constraints apply;
- Floor areas where the height of the car ceiling is 1.6m or less are discarded.
- Floor areas in between transverse seats are excluded to allow for foot space.
- Floor area 300mm in front of longitudinal seats (including tip-up seats) are excluded (assumes all tip-up seats are occupied) to allow for foot space.
The theoretical crush loading assumes no tip-up seats are in use and all floor area is occupied by standing passengers irrespective of ceiling height.
