Question on bus lane length / bus speeds

Request ID: FOI-0282-2425
Date published: 29 May 2024

You asked

Follow-up to FOI-4531-2425: Many thanks for the answer. I see that several km of bus lanes have been removed in march 2024. Do you have any information on the reasons behind it? Another thing that I’m interested in are average bus speeds in 2011 and 2012. I have already searched for this data in the available resources, but only 2013 and newer data can be gathered. Is this something you can search for?

TfL Ref: EIR-0282-2425

Thank you again for your email of 23rd April 2024.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked the following, further to case reference FOI-4531-2425:

I see that several km of bus lanes have been removed in march 2024. Do you have any information on the reasons behind it?

Another thing that I’m interested in are average bus speeds in 2011 and 2012. I have already searched for this data in the available resources, but only 2013 and newer data can be gathered. Is this something you can search for?«.

I am afraid that having liaised with various colleagues across different parts of TfL I have been unable to find answers to these questions, and can therefore only conclude that TfL does not hold the necessary recorded information to answer them.

In regard to the question on bus lanes, it may well be the case that the bus lanes removed were part of the local borough road network rather than the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN – which makes up about 5% of London’s roads only). We have searched all Traffic Orders made by TfL in March 2024 to see whether any contain orders for bus lane removal, but none do.

In regard to bus speeds, TfL does not hold any data older than Period 5 from the financial year 2012/13 – which I believe you may already have – but it is provided below in any event:. Figures are in mph:

 NETWORK P01P02P03P04P05P06P07P08P09P10P11P12P13
2012/13 n/an/an/an/a9.919.789.609.679.589.979.869.749.75

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
