We answered

TfL Ref: 0252-2223

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 5 May 2022 asking for information about the average distance travelled within the London Congestion Charge zone and London ULEZ.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked: I would like to know the average distance travelled within the London Congestion Charge zone and London ULEZ please.
TfL does not hold observed data about the trip lengths in different parts of London. However, an estimate of this information can be extracted from transport models used at TfL which are built on observed trip behaviour through the London Travel Demand Survey (LTDS) and observed traffic counts. Information is available from LTDS for trips entirely within a zone but at the distances are crow-fly these need to be converted to route distance.

Using these estimates from TfL’s Strategic highway model (LoHAM) and LTDS, the average trip length for car trips entirely within the CCZ is between 1.6 and 2.8 km and the average trip length of car trips entirely within ULEZ (not travelling to the CCZ) is between 3.5 and 4.2 km. The average trip lengths for cars travelling between the two areas is 6.8 km and the average trip length for car trips travel to the ULEZ area from outer London is 11.6km.

The average trip length for Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) trips entirely within the CCZ is slightly longer at 3 km and the average trip length of LGV trips entirely within ULEZ (not travelling to the CCZ) is 5.9 km. The average trip lengths for LGVs travelling between the two areas is 6.7 km and the average trip length for LGV trips travel to the ULEZ area from outer London is 13.9 km.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
