Crossrail - platform edge screens and doors

Request ID: FOI-0249-2223
Date published: 27 May 2022

You asked

Follow-up to FOI-2956-2122: Thank you for your reply. I am learning much about how complicated the Crossrail contracts are. The cost item I am looking for is just the platform edge doors/screens. Not looking for any of the utility, electronics, or mechanicals of a fully operational system. Is it possible to extract that cost item, for just a single station? And were these platform edge screens installed by the main contractor of each station, or were they installed by the manufacturer.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0249-2223

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 4th May 2022 asking for information about the platform edge doors/screens on the Elizabeth Line.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I can confirm that we hold the information you require. However, as mentioned before in response to case ref FOI-2956-2223, there is no quick or efficient way of separating out the costs of all of the different components of the paltform edge screens. Colleagues estimate that it would take significantly more than the 18 hours cost limit to analyse the contract final accounts and provide these figures, even for a single station. However, I am informed that the anticipated final costs for the platform edge doors alone, covering all of the 8 stations, is £84.7m. This includes design, procurement, installation, testing and maintenance. The doors were installed at each station by Knorr – Bremse Rail Systems (UK) Ltd. The video found via the following link, which explains how the platform screen doors were installed, may be of interest: https://youtu.be/xEkwtfIivHw
