FOI request detail

information about noise of tube trains between Kentish Town and Tufnell Park

Request ID: FOI-0248-1819
Date published: 14 May 2018

You asked

I would like TfL to please answer the following questions: Were any remedial works carried on out the Northern Line track between Kentish Town and Tufnell Park to lessen the noise of tube trains in November 2017? If so, what did the works consist of? Was any positive response(s) from local residents received by TfL following such November works - assuming they were carried out - in the form of emails or other written communication? If so, how many such responses were there? Did TfL's Derek Wilson have a meeting with TfL's engineers regarding the noise from the track in March or April 2018? Is there a record of what was discussed at this meeting? If so, can this be made available? Have wooden sleepers been replaced with concrete sleepers on this stretch of track?

Our ref: FOI-0248-1819/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 30 April 2018 asking for information about the Northern Line track between Kentish Town and Tufnell Park.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

Were any remedial works carried on out the Northern Line track between Kentish Town and Tufnell Park to lessen the noise of tube trains in November 2017?

If so, what did the works consist of?

Yes. Resilient Track Fastening installed June 2017, joint removal November 2017.

Was any positive response(s) from local residents received by TfL following such November works - assuming they were carried out - in the form of emails or other written communication? If so, how many such responses were there?

We do not record this information in a way which allows us to advise you specifically on the number of positive responses received, however we can advise that reports at the affected properties indicated a reduction in noise of approximately 10dB.

Did TfL's Derek Wilson have a meeting with TfL's engineers regarding the noise from the track in March or April 2018? Is there a record of what was discussed at this meeting? If so, can this be made available?

Derek meets Track Engineers weekly to discuss noise issues across TfL. Minutes are not taken.

Have wooden sleepers been replaced with concrete sleepers on this stretch of track?

From Kentish Town to Tufnell Park the first 420m of track has had wooden sleepers replaced with concrete (in 2005). The track between about 420m and 683m has not.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
