Request ID: FOI-0239-2324
Date published: 27 April 2023

You asked

Dear Transport for London, I'm researching the use of physical bells on London buses. As such, could you please provide the following information: Do TfL buses use electric bells or is a digital bell sound played through a loudspeaker? Is this consistent across all models/types of TfL bus? If not, which models use electric bells / digital audio?

Our ref: FOI-0239-2324/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 23 April 2023 asking for information about bells on TfL Buses.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

Do TfL buses use electric bells or is a digital bell sound played through a loudspeaker?
Both electric bells and digital generated bell sounds that use a small speaker.

Is this consistent across all models/types of TfL bus?
There are no specific technical performance/requirements in the bus specification as to how the sound is produced to communicate to the driver to stop the bus at the next stop.

If not, which models use electric bells / digital audio?
We do not hold information on which bus type uses the electric bell or digital.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
