You asked
What happens to decommissioned railway sleepers? Are there any schemes in place to reuse them in green spaces etc. or are they stored somewhere or sold to landscaping companies?
We answered
Our ref: FOI-0231-2425/GH
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 20 April 2024 asking for information about Decommissioned Railway Sleepers.
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.
Network Rail are responsible for the majority of train lines, and therefore railway sleepers, so you may wish to refer your request to them.
For the railway lines TfL is responsible for (mainly London Underground), we can advise that in general our railway sleepers are beyond any useful life when they are replaced. They may be cut up to reduce weight when handling and are supplied to re-cycling centres.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.
Yours sincerely
