Missing data from FOI-2490-1920

Request ID: FOI-0231-2021
Date published: 20 May 2020

You asked

Hello, I'm looking for some information which was previously requested in an FOI sent on 16th December 2019 (FOI-2490-1920). You sent the requester a table with the average CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre in kilograms for each type of transport that is managed by TFL, with an example of of how it could be used to calculate the total amount of CO2 in kilograms that is emitted by a single passenger travelling X kilometre using Y type of transport. Unfortunately, the there is no table or attachment in the publication of the request online so I cannot access this data. Could you sent me this table?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0231-2021

Thank you for your request of 19th May 2020 asking for a copy of the table of data sent in response to case FOI-2490-1920.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

I can confirm that we hold the information you require. The full text of the response to case FOI-2490-1920, including the table of data, is copied below:

TfL Ref: 2490-1920

Thank you for your request received by us on 17 November 2019 asking for information about CO2 emissions from various modes of public transport.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked for:

average CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre in kilograms for each type of transport that is managed by TFL. Please can you include an example of how I can use this data in order to calculate the total amount of CO2 in kilograms that is emitted by a single passenger travelling X kilometre using Y type of transport. For example, how much CO2 is emitted is a single passenger travels along a bus route for 2 kilometres. It is very important that I receive the data, the metric used (including whether it is measured in tonnes, kilograms or grams) and the necessary details on how this information can be correctly used to calculate CO2 emissions per kilometre

We are committed to making London a greener and healthier city. For instance, all TfL buses operating in the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in central London meet or exceed Euro VI emission standards. Euro VI is the latest emission standard for vehicles reducing emissions of NOx by up to 95%. Buses operating in the area are made up of zero emission (at tail pipe) buses, new Euro VI standard buses, buses retrofitted to Euro VI standards and hybrid Euro VI standard buses.

Our growing fleet of greener buses now includes over 200 electric buses, and in 2020 all new single deck buses entering the fleet will be zero emission (at tailpipe). They will be a mix of hydrogen buses and electric buses. These buses will contribute to improving air quality and are also much quieter, with lower vibration levels for a more comfortable experience. Additionally, hybrid buses can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30% when compared to a diesel bus. We have around 3,700 of these double deck hybrids buses and 220 pure electric buses in our fleet serving the capital.

To support the London Environment Strategy, we continue to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions and energy use.
