Current policy on how buggies on tfl buses

Request ID: FOI-0154-2122

You asked

I wish to make an FOI request on the current policy of buggies on tfl buses. I have twins and it is easier to travel with another person and 2 single buggies. The majority of TFL buses are helpful in allowing on the bus but a minority are making it difficult by stating only 1 buggy allowed (even though we are from same household). We normally travel when the buses are quiet. Due to the discrepancy in the buggy policy being used I would like written information on the policy used by drivers.

We answered

TfL Ref 0154-21/22 Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 24 April 2021 asking for information about our policy around buggy numbers on our buses. Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked for: the current policy of buggies on tfl buses. The information you asked for is available in the Big Red Book for bus drivers which we have released in relation to a previous FOI request published on our website at the following location: https://foi.tfl.gov.uk/FOI-0821-2021/BigRed_Book_2019.pdf. In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere. Bay size varies across buses. While there is a minimum bay size, some operators procure vehicles with even bigger bays and this can allow two or more buggies to be carried under normal circumstances. As we are still following Government requirements on social distancing, there will be instances where passengers cannot be in the same space and this may affect numbers of buggies permitted on board. Outside of the pandemic, we are trying to make the bay as spacious as bus design allows, and this approach has seen increases in the dimensions of wheelchair bays and enabled more unfolded pushchairs to be carried overall on the network. There is some further information in our recently updated our Conditions of Carriage: https://content.tfl.gov.uk/tfl-conditions-of-carriage.pdf If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation. If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me. Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed. Yours sincerely Sara Thomas FOI Case Management Team General Counsel Transport for London
