Our Ref: FOI-0132-1819

Thank you for your request received on 13 April 2018 asking for information about first-generation Oyster cards.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

How many of your first generation oyster cards are still in use?

1.48 million first generation cards were used in the past year.

Apologies and in addition how many cases or reports have there been of them not working or failure to be read on the oyster card reader?

Please note that in May 2017 a new system was introduced to record customer enquiries to our Customer Service team. Since June 2017, we have been contacted 38,029 by customers who asked to replace their first generation Oyster cards. Please note that this does not mean the card was not working, just that they were replaced. We do not separately record the reason why the replacement was requested.

If this is not the information you are looking for please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
