Sustrans
Sustrans spend covers the following initiatives:
Sustrans were contracted to deliver TfL’s Healthy Streets Officer (HSO) programme from 2019-2022.
The Healthy Streets Officers were a group of 18-20 Active Travel specialists who supported the Boroughs to deliver on their Active Travel objectives. They were employed by Sustrans but worked within Borough teams.
Their role was to support the boroughs’ delivery of STARS - a TfL schools accreditation scheme focused on sustainable, active responsible and safe travel. Sustrans also supported delivery of infrastructure programmes, business engagement and cycle training.
TfL contracted Sustrans to recruit and manage the team and lead on the management of the project.
This project represents the majority of the spend outlined below.
They also separately delivered Summer of Cycles which is a children’s cycling event which represented a small amount of spend.
Sustrans also received Walking and Cycling Grant funding from TfL to deliver four local walking/cycling projects between 2019-2023.
Walking and Cycling Grants London (WCGL) is a grant programme funded by Transport for London in partnership with The London Marathon Foundation. We fund grants of up to three years to community groups and organisations, to deliver projects and programmes that remove the barriers to walking and cycling and enable all communities to enjoy the benefits of active travel.
In 2021/22, 78% of participants of WCGL said they are cycling more and 85% said they are walking more.
This programme runs with grants awarded from November to September so does not fit into the financial year structure.
LCC
Sustrans spend covers the following initiatives:
LCC delivered ‘Dr Bike’ where experienced mechanics check everything on your bike from wheels, brakes, gears and tyre pressure to lights, racks, pedals, saddles and more.
LCC also received Walking and Cycling Grants funding to deliver one cycling project from 2020-2023.
